SAINT MARTIN ISLAND

Saint Martin Island

By Nikki · June 7, 2026

With stunning tropical beaches, secluded coves, beautiful bays, and excellent food, Saint Martin is wonderful for a short cruise ship stopover, or for a long vacation. The island is divided, practically in half, horizontally, the top side is French, and the bottom part is Dutch. But honestly, that's exactly what made St. Martin a fabulous place to visit, because I experienced two completely different vibes in one place.

GETTING THERE

St. Martin is in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. Many travelers arrive on cruise ships, like I did, but also it is an easy flight from Miami International Airport MIA and other airports along the eastern USA to Princess Juliana International Airport SXM.

I found St. Martin to be both naughty and nice. There was a higher end, sophisticated French part of the island, but the Dutch side was filled with plenty of strip clubs, casinos, and raunchy bars where almost anything goes.

AMAZING EXCURSIONS

I took an excursion to Maho Beach on the Dutch side. It had sparkling white sand and clear warm waters, but its claim to fame was the shoreline extended exactly underneath the flight path for incoming airplanes. Tourists swam in the incredible light blue water, while huge aircraft floated just feet above them on approach to land. It was thrilling to see! I also stood at the edge of the runway as planes took off, the forceful jet engine blast pushing me and other people, and sand around! It was exciting and literally hair raising. On the sides of Maho Beach were restaurants and bars, where people sat happily eating seafood and enjoying a drink, while watching the spectacle.

On the French side of the island, Marigot Bay had authentic restaurants, specialized boutiques, and small traditional markets. I ate delicious French Onion Soup at a restaurant along the bay and the yummy food options were endless! The marina and bay waters were filled with small boats and large Super Yachts, and French flags flew everywhere in patriotism.

St. Martin had plenty of duty-free shopping, particularly on the Dutch side in the main town of Philipsburg. Traditional Guavaberry Rum, Maarten Rhum, perfume, and tobacco products were among the top items.

A visit to Saint Martin island in the Caribbean offered something for everyone, both naughty and nice. Whether it's a day-long cruise ship stopover, or a longer vacation, it had scenic beaches, lively bars, great food, and two fascinating distinct sides to explore, one Dutch and the other French.
